Designing for Observation

You do not need to construct elaborate feeding stations or perform heavy landscaping to observe wildlife. Creating a bird-friendly space is largely about reducing human disturbance and providing basic natural necessities.

Natural Cover and Shelter

Birds feel safest when they have a quick escape route. Retaining patches of dense, natural brush or allowing a corner of a yard to remain slightly unmanicured provides the cover necessary for birds to feel secure enough to linger.

The Value of Water

A simple, shallow pan of clean water is often more attractive to a wider variety of birds than any specific seed. Water is essential for both drinking and bathing (preening). Ensure the water source is shallow, has a rough bottom for grip, and is changed regularly to remain clean.
